Returning to the talk, first fusion experiments often were conducted using hydrogen, mix of hydrogen and e.g. neon, etc. This fact does not mean that anyone was intented to use mentioned gas in real fusion reactors.

I didn't see any mention of it in this thread, but there's a company on the web, Fusion Power Corp., that was formed to bring the technology of heavy ion fusion to market.
I don't know where they are with their experiments, or funding, though...
