Post by rcain »

forgot to post this up yesterday:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-14842720 - bbc 9 sept 2011

http://www.iop.org/activity/business/ca ... 51819.html - iop memorandum - 7 sept 2011

https://lasers.llnl.gov/ - NIF Newsroom - i see Spain also joined up last month - august 2011.

*delurks*

AWE = Atomic Weapons Establishment
Kinda explains what they want out of it.

indeed. but what do they know that we don't? (besides 'a lot'). why right now?

i see there is also a fuel pellet processing industry up for grabs, if anything comes of it, if they can shoot down.... {ehem}, space junk ... for instance with it.

it seems NIF is actually becoming bigger - I didn't quite expect that, right now. i mean, have they seen the graph on FoFu's site? -

- i mean, that's seems a little embarrassing for everyone except Eric Lerner.. dont you think?

certainly, slightly different objectives, i would say. 8)

Oh, good, now we'll get the benefit of Spain's demonstrated expertise in generating power with light...
n*kBolt*Te = B**2/(2*mu0) and B^.25 loss scaling? Or not so much? Hopefully we'll know soon...

lol.

they may well be factoring in some very passable sherry, fine sausage, and a limited offer timeshare somewhere near a golf course... to the deal.. ...i dare say... (to be fair i haven't read the full press release).

That's some important supplies when you have to throw the party to announce the first fusion reaction. Maybe NIF people are indeed getting ready for some good announcement

Just qurious:

1 n equals to one D + T reaction resulting in 17,6 x 10^6 eV of energy

We have a projected value of some 3,7 x 10^6 x 60 = 222 x 10^6 neutrons per expended joule with D-T fuel in that contraption.

Produced amount of energy per expended joule is 17,6 x 10^6 x 222 x 10^6 x 1,60219 x 10^-19=17,6 x 222 x 1,60218 x 10^-7 = roughly 6,3 x 10-4 J.

Must be improved by about 10 000 times to be of any value.

a mere trifle. what is a factor of 10^4 between friends. especially with new spark plugs and a new timing belt....
