Tesla Roadster Sport: 4.11 hp/lb
(Wikipedia) The Sport Model introduced during the 2009 Detroit Auto Show includes a motor with a higher density, hand-wound stator that produces a maximum of 288 hp (215 kW)... It weighs less than 70 pounds.

This Leeson ships at 1900lbs.
Equivilent DCmotor is gonna be about a third heavier if I had to guess.

Can you give a link to the car mod article?
I can't find the one I found before. It had a lot more zip (0-60, 3.7 sec) than this one which is more like 7 seconds.

I looked harder and I still can't find it, but I did find this thread which makes an interesting read from hind-sight.

Aero,

You posted a link in another thread which eventually leads to here:
http://www.remyinc.com/docs/102509_WHITE PAPER_fin.pdf

... which ends up as a broken link and I haven't a clue how to fix it!

In that document they claim 2.3kW/kg which I make just under 1.4hp/lb.

Custom build motors and exotics are well outside of the commercial realm. Thanks for the links, I knew the AF had made some progress on supercooled motors. For Tesla, pulling 288HP out of a 70lb frame is pretty darn cool. I wonder what its life span is projected for? You can do some neat stuff with exotic permanent magnets, custom windings, and field manipulation. Costs money though. The new low power king of the hill are brushless DC. Lots of power, very small package.

Copy and paste works. I'll link it again.
