Out of my depth vs vacuum tubes...

Okay, I'm waaay out of my depth. Care: Your mileage may vary... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_tube poking around the links found a 'rule of thumb' of one (1) micro-torr as requirement for a 'good tube', plus a warning that this is difficult by pumping due out-gassing etc. http://www.vacuumtube...

Vacuum and ''vacuum"

Uh, I'd be careful using the Polywell's pump for vacuum tubes. IIRC, the 'shiny', metallised patch inside a 'tube is where the commercially pumped vacuum has been 'gettered' clean. Hence my comment about the wake-shield required for LEO... FWIW, I read somewhere that each Apollo landing's exhaust & ...

IIRC...

IIRC, modern MOSFETs' industrial kin are *better* than vacuum tubes except for self-resonant applications. eg Klystron in microwave oven... Uh, IIRC, a bunch of people are re-creating 'the valve sound' by making MOSFET assemblies that will 'plug'n'play'... Now, if you were working in orbit or on Moo...

OT: Not a polywell issue ??

FWIW, the time-average as described depends on how long it was hung on-load prior to release, and how long off-load after release before you halt the experiment...

A caution...

Sorry, I can't run *anything* on this minimal Browser_PC, but that's not the point... Couple of years back, there was a problem with Sims of Sol-type star evolution. They'd evolve as far as a red giant, then just settle down to a white dwarf without burping a 'nebula'... IIRC, it needed 3D modelling...

Slightly OT...

Uh, there could be a serendipitous cross-over from NASA's X-prize for tether-climbers using beamed energy.

Watch that space ??

I'm still wondering if the utility of microwave flux from a polywell is under-rated...

IMHO...

IMHO, electrostatic mechanicals are a very clumsy way to extract energy on this scale. Sure, micro-machines may do well. Sure, some very big machines, like accelerators in reverse, could suck energy from the 'plumes'... Unless I'm mistaken, power-to-volume for electrostatic rotary machinery is likel...

'Serendipity'

Could it be said that the Polywell approach is still small enough to respond to serendipitous developments ?? Something like ITER is TOO BIG to adapt 'on the fly'... Funny, just as Ares rocket may be chopped to a 'license me' capsule and escape system, USAF are working to put X-37 mini-shuttle into ...

An Advance in Superconducting Magnet Technology Opens the Door for More Powerful Colliders http://www.physorg.com/news180185602.html (PhysOrg.com) -- Preparing for as much as a 10-fold increase in the Large Hadron Collider's luminosity within the next decade, U.S. scientists and engineers have demon...
