From my point of view the main reason that there are so many folks involved in the Tokamak design is because it's one of the projects that perpetually runs into more complexity as it goes along. Having decades of experience in writing code for real-time control systems I can tell you with some autho...

Actually the issue with the ITER is not its size, large as it might be, it's that the design isn't conducive to steam generation on a continuous basis. Looking at the supercooled magnetic rings that are required to contain the plasma field I'm stumped as to how they expect to also squeeze in 1000 de...

So what we are really saying here is that economies and political states (ie Iran, Saudia Arabia, Russia....) will go the way of Rome and collapse under the weight of their social offerings once the revenues from exporting gas and oil disappear or are substantially reduced. Having spent some time in...

I have often seen the opinion expressed here on these forums that the oil industry will be devastated by the introduction of a commercially viable fusion power source. As nice a fantasy as this might be it is far from what reality will show us. Even if today we hear that the pb11 fusion problem has ...

Re: Power losses

SOrry for the nubie question, but when the presentation talks about "Bremsstrahlung losses ≈ 1/3 fusion output power", is this effectively x-ray energy? Yup. The ions undergoing fusion are mixed with electrons of roughly the same temperature. When these electrons collide with the ions, they emit x-...

The 6.6m break even radius size would seem indicate that the building needed to house the reaction chamber would be aprox. 90 foot on a side minimum. What throws me a little is the scaling of his diagram on page 2. Does anyone know how big that object is?

Hmm. You couldn't be thinking of the Hatch Geothermal Power Plant ? Reportedly, thus far it is consuming 4MW to produce 5MW for Anaheim. Nowhere close to 100MW... Nope.. Just small power projects that would allow independence from the grid if a blackout should occur. In California we have a rough t...

Besides that, 100 MW is pretty small by power plant standards, most nuke plants range from 850MW-1.4 GW in the US. Actually I've had several conversations with people in the power industry and they have indicated that many of their customers are asking for co-generation projects in the 100 MW range...

Here is the summary of the last conversation I had on costs: The cost of building a 100 megawatt Polywell reactor can estimated to be about $50 million by assuming the following: 1. The vacuum pumping system for the reaction chamber costs about five million dollars. 2. A set of super conducting magn...

Did anyone think to ask for the minutes of the panel discussion that took place? Normally these are recorded and sold later to the participants of the conference.

In a recent conversation I had with a legislative aid to Senator Feinstein. He told me how the Secretary of Energy had asked the Navy about the latest nuclear power plants that they were researching. To which the Navy responded that their research nuclear powers would be 100 times more expensive and...

Public Policy Paper for Congress

Hi All, Maybe you all can answer a question for me. I'm going to DC the week of June 14th and will be speaking to a number of members of congress as well as the Heritage Foundation about alternative energy policy. In particular I'm going to be pitching for more funding for the polywell research. Is ...
