Joe and Jeff, awesome points. I learn a lot in this forum. Kurzweil's Singularity moment is the year 2039 IIRC. When will complete mind uploading occur? Technically speaking it already is. My ideas in this forum are being recorded indefinitely as I write. Obviously this is teensy capability compared...

One of Ray K's points of emphasis is the combination of machine and biological intelligence/technology. We are arguing over whether the future will be "wet" or "dry." The reality is probably "damp." Kurt9, you mentioned you work in the semiconductor field. Ray K mentions 3D architecture to chips, na...

Hey Joe, we found something to agree on! :D I read Kurzweil's "The Singularity is Near" a few years ago and was blown away. His internet videos are great, too. I'm not sure how qualified I am to judge is point of view but he sure is convincing. What I find interesting about him on energy is that he ...

"PEAK OIL DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF OIL, ONLY THAT PRODUCTION WILL" Extremely true and thanks MSimon for clarifying my point. The price of oil if politically unshackled would be extremely cheap. $20 bbl? Probably not but my original post had the intent of saying there is still so much pote...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_shale_economics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tar_sands I know, I know, Wikipedia is not THE authority on all issues but I've casually checked many of the citations and at first glance it's at least in the ballpark. But...MSimon you couldn't be more spot on. There is ...

Does anyone else see a perfect storm of potential technologies all maturing about 10 - 15 years from now? The synergy of high density supercapacitors, polywell fusion, and robotics/AI will change everything from how we travel to international politics. Usually, world changing technologies hit us one...

Is there any other branch of science more tarnished and looked at with more skepticism than nuclear fusion? Even if Dr. Nebel and crew make it work they will need a massive PR campaign to overcome the prejudice and ignorance.

Keegan, I'm aware of the awesome tensile strength necessary to construct the ribbon and the current limitations on CNT length. But, I'm not sure we need 100,000 km CNT molecules to make an adequate ribbon. One millimeter tubes woven into a matrix would make a ribbon capable of supporting a modest el...

Thanks for the input Tom. The synergistic effects of both the elevator and compact, fusion power may have a few important contributions. First, the rocket power to lift the ribbon would be much cheaper if they are powered by BFR's instead of chemicals. Brad Edwards' concept is to lift a spool to GEO...

Polywell + Space Elevator = Hyper Cheap Access To Space

Some of the hangups with the Space Elevator are extemely high powered lasers, the guidance of the beams through the atmosphere, the PV cell conversion efficiency, and other factors. If a polywell reactor could be placed on an aircraft why couldn't it be placed on an elevator to power it into space? ...

A quote from the article... "But it appears to me that both sides (Republicans and Democrats) are so focused on sticking a thorn in the other’s side that they’ve lost the ability to work together for the greater good." I couldn't agree more. I believe today's politics reflect the kind of culture Ame...

It would be interesting to see what John Q. Public would consider "good enough" when balancing range, cost, and charge time for EV's. Tesla Motors advertises that battery technology is improving at an 8% clip per year. That is significant. By 2020, 500 mile ranges and 1.5 hour recharge times are pos...

"Taking the fat outta a fryer and driving with it is a good thing, albeit a niche market." Roger, I agree and I may have misrepresented my thought with the word "bunk." Niche market is the the key. Energy independence and improving the environment cannot be achieved by biofuels. The fundamental poin...
