Money doesn't get "locked up in private bank accounts". As soon as you put your millions in a bank, it gets re-invested in someone's business. If its invested wisely, it just produces more wealth. Some for the owner, some for the people he hires. See "yacht taxes" for the effect of over-taxing luxu...

This is the General Forum. Life Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness. General Political philosophy is on. At least until some one posts on one of the technical topics. If Joe comes in and says No Mas - OK. As one of the moderators as long as there is no spam and nothing about candidates or parties ...

My son got a Free ride at Rockefeller U (UChicago). He graduated with honors. Worth something like $160,000. Trickle down worked for me and him. I would need to know the nature of the free ride to comment knowledgeably. If it was a grant or scholarship from a foundation - charitable foundations end...

Poverty in the main is caused by bad government. No. It's the result of a non-functional civil society. The nongovernmental formal & informal underpinnings of society. Without respect for law, property and the persons of others, the machinery called "government" doesn't matter. And those informal t...

Islam being more tribal than the USSR is going through its Ghost Dance Phase. When they figure out Allah is not on their side it will all come crashing down. Simon, I'm not sure Polywell is the proper place to go deep into politics. Do you have a preferred list/blog, or we could take it to my littl...

I read that as another Jimmah Carter Nobel - a "screw the Bushies" statement of self-righteousness.

But all the "solve the climate crisis" and "oil is now green" commercials on tv of late are getting my attention.

Re: Antarctic ice area

I started studying the stuff at Climate Audit and it looked to me like the warmists were cooking the books to increase their access to funding streams. Bad statistics, bad data, bad models. And a willingness to shade the truth (at best) convinced me that something was not right. It was a bit more p...

I thought world population was supposed to start dropping in the next 60 years. It is. The "Limits of Growth" model from the '70s that kick-started the various eco-apocalypse theories, Malthusian Meltdown included, has been a bad joke since 1985. The fanatics don't care. This thread seems much less...

* http://timprosserfuturing.wordpress.com/2008/04/11/not-with-a-bang-but-with-a-whimper/ * Population reduction can be achieved the easy way, by a massive, worldwide educational effort focused especially on the developing countries, if it successfully convinces people to almost completely stop havi...

Re: Screw the Space Elevator, Lets Launch Loop

As much as i love the idea of a space elevator. A cable thats 37,500 kilometers long, built out of materials that are yet to be developed seems a little far fetched for me. I was blown away when i recently discovered the Launch Loop . Its based on the inertia of an Iron cable 5cm in diameter moving...

Also, Mann's "hockey stick" says the Medieval Warm Period was signficantly colder than today and the last ten years are the warmest in the last seveal thousand. As Simon points out, people lived in Greenland during the MWP; there is evidence it was significantly warmer than today. There's also cons...

Re: What's the output of a vacuum turbo pump?

Neutron flux is going to be higher with DHe3 than with pB11 because of the D-D side reaction. Irrelevant if its a minor enhancement to the primary fuel cycle. DHe3 is still largely aneutronic, even if not as much as pB11. And there is the little problem of He3 availability. Yeah. Brain fart. I forg...
