This is all premises on the idea that - in terms of KE, at least - you can collimate ions better than electrons. If this is false, it might not be worth it I would expect this to be the case. Mmm... interesting and enlightening, though use of a cusp seems unnecessary to detrimental. In a Polywell or Lockheed design with cusps, the recirculating electron (and possibly ion) current would bombard the neutral beam gun tube- probably bad. And, most plasma containment schemes do not have cusps...
