Re: Horrible.
I remember a similar scenario but there was no vaporization. It was a Larry Niven story set in the early days of the Known Space universe where Gil "the arm" Hamilton was a member of the Amalgamated Regional Militias (ARM) (UN police force). The violator wasn't vaporized, he was harvested for organ...
Re: Horrible.
Can't resist cross-linking this with the Skynet thread . I read a sci-fi short story in the 1970s or 80s about a robot/AI traffic cop who pulls some guy over and charges him with a minor traffic violation, then, by "...the authority of the Overpopulation Act of 1990..." (or something like that), pro...

Sintered metal objects from a standard FDM 3D printer
Filamet(TM) metal-infused filament with Bronze, Copper (soon Brass, Nickel-Silver?) for producing high-density metal objects, sintered in a kiln, after being printed on a cheap, run-of-the-mill FDM printer . Wondering about shrinkage/deformation from heating, but this sounds promising for non-m/bill...

http://gizmodo.com/5992899/this-delightful-dragonfly-drone-swims-swiftly-through-the-air Not bad, but not nearly as good as a DNA-based blue dragonfly I once saw. Fundamental physics from geometry
A brief geometric derivation of some fundamental physics http://arxiv.org/pdf/1606.08484 Obviously, many of the results in the paper are familiar. However, the restriction to a purely geometric approach focusing on the properties of vectors has some interesting consequences. For example, spin and p...

Re: Skynet is coming.
If USAF is really serious about finding out the truth regarding AI vs. Human, they should encourage a wide variety of pilots (professional, amateur, outlier) to take on their best Machine. A crowd-sourced test program. Subject to the usual security constraints, of course.
