I read the same thing in wikipedia that Blaise did ("V' came from Voler). It cited a Naval Aviation Compendium as the reference.

One of my personal nickname favorites was Saratoga: "Sorry Sara" and sorry she was at the end.

I am not sure I buy the fixed wing part. Our carriers also fly helos. They don't get u/w without helos if aircraft are embarked. According to Wikipedia, aircraft carriers were originally conceived as similar to cruisers (which had the designation C), and the V came from the Frence verb voler, meani...

I was being serious.
I will let everyone know when I have run the course.
I currently am pursuing two options. Both have promise.
Be patient.

Bell XV-15 developed in the 70's. Ironically, I just saw it last Monday in DC. Still looks good.

ltgbrown: Alas poor Ethan, I knew him well... KitemanSA: I believe that Princeton dropped the aft load, as well as had to take down SPY and the Suite for a couple of hours. They also lost the aft launcher. For Tripoli, I am not sure, but I think you are right, she did not drop the plant, just some ...

We talk on LCS a lot at work. We see them as Frigates in all but name. According to OPNAVINST 9070.1 (available via Google) Frigates are required to have a survivability level II. Seems to let them play with the big dogs (level III). According to GlobalSecurity.org: The LCS will meet the requiremen...

I don't know what you guys have against the LPD 17. Granted Northrup Grumman's workmanship on the first two ships was beyond pathetic, but the basic design is very good. See the comments of the LPD 19's captain: http://militarytimes.com/blogs/scoopdeck/2010/04/14/co-mesa-verde-is-running-like-a-top...

We talk on LCS a lot at work. We see them as Frigates in all but name. I work on LCSs too much. My opinion is that they are Frigate wannabes and will always have problems fulfilling the "escort" role. Our Admirals, bless their hearts, will try... You did point out the differences between the 1 clas...

From wikipedia: "Modern navies began a trend in the late 20th and early 21st century towards smaller, more maneuverable surface capability. Corvettes have a displacement between 540 and 2,750 long tons (550 and 2,800 metric tons) and measure 180–330 feet (55–100 metres) in length." The LCSs are ~31...

Note the displacement data for LCS(s) does not include mission module packages. They carry roughly half the draft. (Thus less dispacement, over increased deck area.) Rough numbers for arguments sake; LCS1 rectangled vs draft: 379*57.4=21754.6sqft/3000tons = 7.25sqft/ton at Draft: 12.1 ft (3.7 m) LCS...

Ah. But the US Navy wants the project bad enough to spend the money to hurry it along. And $15 million is not a bad bet against cutting the Naval oil budget by 50% to 90% depending on how you count aircraft fuel. Think of reducing oil tanker needs by 60%. Reducing oil logistics by 90%. Fleet operat...
