Re: Well he's not Zefram Cochrane, but...

As I understand the Frank Herbert universe, before the Butlerian Jihad interstellar travel depended on artificial intelligence having a psionic ability to circumvent the normal bounds of spacetime. no, no. in Dune universe, they use a stardrive that folds space and works like a wormhole. The stardr...

Not sure how that image fits with Dune books or movie intro, except the fact the guys in black are probably Sardaukars. As for Asimov books, I dont remember anything about men-tool symbiosis. Well, there is something like that when se consider Spacers and their robots, and specially the Spacers from...

Re: Mach Effect progress

I would take that a step further and say that practical MET thrusters make deep gravity wells shallow if not flat. Which means they can be ignored when one is making decisions on where to locate something. Remember too that in situ space resource utilization which has been a hot topic for the last ...

Re: Mach Effect progress

There are two ways of understanding the consequence of tapping the gravinertial field for momentum and energy. One is to note you're stealing momentum and mathematically, this means you're causing the universe to accelerate in its expansion. The other is to note you're decreasing entropy locally, w...

I remember some speculation years ago, here at TP, that the ideal design for a ME Spaceship would be somewhat like... a flying saucer?

Re: Mach Effect progress

people cause thousands of deaths every year in USA alone driving in 2D. Imagine driving in 3D. Multiplied by gravity. It has always been my understanding that flying cars would have to be self driving, automatically communicating with the other cars in the vicinity. There might be a central compute...

Flying cars or Bust!. Liechtenstein currently has the highest gross domestic product per capita of any country in the world, and unemployment at an amazing 1.5%. By comparison, unemployment in the US never goes below 4% due to transfer rates between jobs. Prince Hans-Adam II is an amazing banker as...

Re: Firefly News

I'd be really curious to learn what sort of margins he has on the basic design. Carbon composite is really light stuff. Much lighter than LiAl. If the tanks can take the pressure they need them to, and still be lighter than LiAl, then SpaceX has serious competition. And if they're strong enough to ...

I saw this thread and read it yesterday, but for some reason I missed yours. Why? Wish I knew, however...

.... A rocket only spends a short time in the dense atmosphere and then it does not matter anymore. A rocket, yes. It is at relative slow speed as it climbs out of the vast majority of the atmosphere, with most of the acceleration once it is out of the atmosphere. A gun, or magnetic rail is differe...

Re: Orbital Sciences rocket explodes on launch

well... that's what happens when you use rocket engines built in the 60s and stored for 40 years in Siberia.

no wonder Elon Musk was already mocking Orbital Science's approach in his Wired Mag interview back in 2012... saying it was like a punchline of a joke.
