Re: Lady Margaret Thatcher

My knee jerk response would be to immediately dismiss the arguments you linked, but after having seen similar behavior on this side of the pond I can grudgingly concede that perhaps some of the arguments are plausible. I am not nearly so well informed as to what was going on in England as I am rega...

Re: Lady Margaret Thatcher

I came across an alternative view from a UK libertarian and thought it might make an interesting contrast to the hagiographies we're seeing.

Re: John Slough gets NIAC PhaseII award!

I thought this part was kind of cool.
The team had a sample of the collapsed, fist-sized aluminum ring resulting from one of those tests on hand for people to see and touch at the recent NASA symposium.

Re: What Happens When We Run Out Of People To Tax

Potentially Canada as well. Note the key phrase "conversion of certain bank liabilities into regulatory capital." The Government proposes to implement a bail-in regime for systemically important banks. This regime will be designed to ensure that, in the unlikely event that a systemically important ...

Re: Web site becoming unresponsive more often

I agree that a database issue seems like the most likely culprit, but given that it's been happening since the upgrade, my guess is that it's a difference in how this version of phpbb interacts with the database rather than an issue with the database itself. I run a few dozen sites myself, and I dre...

Certainly, if you base your decisions on likelihood of financial gain.

Check out this thread, djolds1. It offers some hope for those who took Nebel's leaving as a bad sign.

Seconded. In fact, I got an Internal Server Error after a 60 second hang when trying to reply to this post. The site's not unusable or anything, but the hangs are definitely annoying.

It also completely ignores the fact that Europe and Japan's industrial capacity had been almost entirely obliterated and we were busy selling them everything they needed to rebuild it.

Re: 10KW LENR demonstrator (new thread)

FLs have been in use for decades. I would have been noticed I should think. Of course. Hopefully no one is taking this too seriously, given which thread we're in. It's just that when reading the article, it occurred to me that I don't know much about fusion with the higher Z elements, so I thought ...

Re: 10KW LENR demonstrator (new thread)

Umm, how would ordinary fusion change the isotopic ratio of mercury? CFLs work with mercury vapor. If you did in fact get some kind of hot fusion, a natural consequence would be a change in the distribution of mercury isotopes. I haven't had a chance yet, but I thought it'd be interesting to look a...

Re: 10KW LENR demonstrator (new thread)

Larsen seems to see LENR everywhere. I suspect that he sees it in his cornflakes in the morning. How about this: http://cen.acs.org/articles/91/web/2013/02/Mercury-Fluorescent-Bulbs-Unique-Isotope.html If the isotopes have changed during usage, what other process could be going on besides LENR? Wha...

Re: Rick Nebel Discussed DC Transformer Project in Los Alamo

Well, I would guess it does suggest that he expects a significantly greater chance the transformer thing will be viable than Polywell. I would suspect a viable Polywell is worth a lot more than $10B/year. I agree with both of these statements. However, there's no reason to think that he won't get a...
