stop blaming "Greed". You might as well blame rainbows. "greed" is responsible a lot like gravity is responsible for the death of someone who took a long walk off a short balcony.... Greed and Fear are the operative forces in the market, so yeah, I admit to a certain glibness there. Here are two re...

That and the elimination of proof-of-income requirements, IIRC, a creation of Phil Gramm's. I really doubt that. Gramm's name comes up mostly in lefty blogs due to the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act which partially repealed Glass-Steagall (I mentioned that above). It intersects with CRA in an amusing way, ...

Obviously you are unfamiliar with the hue and cry over redlining and "The Community Redevelopment Act". That would be an incorrect assumption. It's called the Community Reinvestment Act, and it's been on the books since Carter. The hue and cry is clearly political in nature, and the data does not b...

dnavas, The government forced banks to issue unsound loans. The federal government did not force banks to accept liar (unstated income) loans. The market did. When all the upstarts are accepting them, then you do as well, or you go out of business. In fact, Freddie and Fannie were prevented by law ...

That's a completely unfair assesment. My understanding of the current economic crisis is that it is the result of people defaulting on sub prime mortgages. It appears that under pressure from the government, loans were given to people who never should have gotten them, and could not pay them back. ...

dnavas, The cow thinggie: it is referred to as "The Tragedy of the Commons". What causes it? No one owns the commons. It is not a failure of the market. Awesome! I'll probably forget what it's called in another half dozen days, but I appreciate the pointer. And highly ironic the context I'm using i...

>>> Market forces are driven by people who freely choose to spend their money as they see fit. Sometimes these people do foolish things in excersizing their freedom to wastefully burn fossil fuels, but the market will punish them eventually and Nature will put things right. <<< Ah, if only that were...

The greater the peak output the more closely they have to be mixed. Agreed. I would restate your original as high w/kg is not conducive to stability. Agreed batteries carry both an oxidizer and a reducer, which makes them marginally less safe than a fueled vehicle (and heavier). The trick is to hav...

Batteries are going to be a problem in accidents since they can release a significant fraction of their energy in under a second. That is explosive. It's all chemical reactions, whether it's gasoline or lithium. Gasoline vaporizes, whereas lithium ... The problem with lithium batteries (at least mo...

TallDave, maybe only 20 to 50 mill for a 160cm device. Actually proof of scaling can come far cheaper, WB-6 has 30cm coils, build one double the size, 70cm, and we should hope to see 128x the output. I think that might be done for 3-5 million. Easy. Scaling is not the only concern, though, surely? ...

However, as far as the plasma is concerned these are steady-state discharges. The 100 microsecond to 1 millisecond discharges are longer than any of the plasma timescales. Consequently, the physics learned should have application to steady-state devices. Hmm, well, ELMs seem to occur at a much slow...

They look at the Polywell and see an idea that they think they laid to rest a long time ago and now it's threatening to cut off their funding even though they think it has no merit. Sure, though it's hard to see how $2M can be viewed as much of a threat. They may have even been right -- that Polywe...
