Re: despite the sticker shock....

I agree with Dan and Talldave. Seems like a nice (and quite expensive) science experiment. I just can not see how will ever lead to an economic fusion based energy source. If it could be seen how it would lead to a working energy source, then experiments would be unnecessary. ... What a remarkable ...

On my suggestion, LPP just applied for the 2011 Zayed Future Energy Prize , 3 awards--$1.5 Million, 2X$350,000. If the distinguished jury (headed, of all people, by Pachauri of IPCC fame) has any sense, FF will win hands down. As long as they don't think too deeply about how many apple carts it woul...

This shot was damped with ordinary hydrogen, since they didn't want any actual fusion. Chickens!

And NIF will never be the basis for actual energy production. The laser-charging, pellet-cycling, explosive plasma-management problems are several bridges too far.

The axial magnet's PS had gone blooey, so the runs were done with 'residual' permanent + terrestrial fields. Replacement (warranty) has arrived and s/b in place soon. With that + bringing the 4 blown (out of 12) switches up to snuff, should be able to operate in pB11 regime by later this month (?). ...

Science is a way of trying to make statements that have the lowest possible chance of turning out to be wrong. Good scientists try to pre-empt later challenges by making and suggesting them up-front, themselves, and getting them checked out. The other kind, like "climate scientists", try to prevent ...

Science etc.

GITThruster;
Just to quibble slightly, Jungian theory is is part of the psychoanalytic sub-section of the psychiatric tradition, not psychology. Psychiatry is "medical"; psychology is academic/"scientific" (by its own lights).

... So let's just say it's 100% efficient (!:wink:!), there's gonna be this nano-'stuff' that can take on 20kW of power and it is a thousandth of a micron in thickness!?!? Anyone care to tell me something about thermodynamics here! How hot is this stuff gonna get? Numbers matter. They say one-milli...

That's asking rather a lot, considering the plasma fireball that surrounds anything hitting the atmosphere at thousands of MPH!
