Mostly a comment on acceleration...

I like this technology for a maglev vehicle: ... Yes, I had followed Inductrack for a while for ~stage 0 rocket launch. I wasn't trying to say that the current EMALS was the only technology out there, just that the acceleration forces, from my experience, wouldn't necessarily be in the 1 - 1.5 G ra...

Electromagnetic Launch

However, a gentler launch opens space to a wider range of population. Which is another reason why I like a horizontal launch at around 1 to 1.5 Gs. I would offer that the technology is there to support a larger electomagnetic launch capability, at least as a quasi-first stage for a space launch veh...

Shovel ready?...

Anyone hear about the Navy giving $4 million to prove scaling laws for polywell? I heard it went to OSD today... Something about shovel ready project and stimulus funding...

Interesting, but no plasma background...

anyone here thinking of applying? I would be interested in a job like this, having an impending retirement from the active duty Navy in the early November timeframe... But my background is in aeronautical engineering and flight test - not something they would probably take for a plasma physi...

Duane-
No, I have never discussed either of the Orion space propulsion systems - the nuclear rocket nor the current space capsule.

Not care about money?!!

Of course the Navy does not care about money... I would beg to argue that statement... I'm in the Navy, and we worry about money every day! Whether it is reduced OPTAR (training funds - read fuel for airplanes and ships), or in my current acquisition job, managing the program budget throughout the ...

Turn-Key operation... No?

I am not quite sure how large a ship has to be to accommodate an polywell that produces enough power. Tell me how big the BFR is, and I will accommodate that space in the design of the ship. Most "Small Boys" (frigates and destroyers) in the U.S. Navy today are powered by LM-2500 gas turbine engine...

BFRs on ships...

Ok, sorry I do not quite understand what you are trying to say. I am guessing he is trying to make the point that if the Polywell really works, it won't just be the larger ships (current nuclear type) that get them. Even what are called "small boys" in the frigate and destroyer class are big enough...

Shocked I Say!

Chuck Connors wrote:If turmoil reigns for a few more weeks....we'll see oil below $60/bbl
And just a few years ago, we were "shocked, shocked I say!" to see oil bound up from the $20-$25 a barrel to over $40! Now we might be eagerly hoping for prices to go down to $60 a barrel... Hmmm...

Air Delivery

Of course oversized objects can be delivered by air,... We are talking about a vacuum chamber. It isn't solid, mostly empty space (O.K., filled with gas before it gets all the interior pumped out, but you know what I mean...). I would be interested to see if this is something that can be lifted by ...

True, I was just trying to incite discussion as to how far the government might intrude into something of this magnitude. If the government attempted to "shut down discussion" on this topic, that would just guarantee that we kept talking, and would end up with a Much larger audience as the publicit...

What do people think of a drinking license, revokeable if you prove to be a problem drinker? (Turn on sarcasm shield before you go further...) I'm all for that. Just have your national ID card, with the RFID tag so the police can scan you from a distance, and tell if you have your driving, drinking...

Re: Budget Cycles, not Political Cycles...

Mumbles, how might becoming a "Program of Record" play into this? I assume any result from this past year would have to be very good indeed. Then what? A Program of Record has a funding line that extends through the 6-year Fiscal Year Defense Plan (FYDP). A plus-up is usually only 1 year money, alm...

Budget Cycles, not Political Cycles...

Yes, the Navy... I spoke with someone who thought goverment programs might not be making big decisions until after the next President is in place. Working for the Navy, in acquisition, the two ways this would play out for big money proof-of-concept, provided current reviews are favorable, are most ...
