Re: If we had just kept the F-22 production line funded...

I have one. In 1998 I was in the Persian Gulf when the largest darn thunderstorm I have ever seen moved from Iran out over the water. Normally, not that big a deal except it was nightime, I was flying, and the storm parked itself over the carrier. They cancelled the next launch and diverted everyone...

Re: If we had just kept the F-22 production line funded...

All this said, there are UAV systems that can operate from a CVN deck in an unassisted mode. I have purposely stayed away from that discussion. That was what I was very careful to not rule out by the wording I chose in my previous post. What makes the X-47B special is that it can use the catapult a...

Re: If we had just kept the F-22 production line funded...

Just to further elaborate and clarify. First, I was a LT when I got my alias of LTGBrown. I was LT Glenn Brown. Now I am a CDR. I will have to agree with GIT that non-carrier based UAVs are not capable of handling a carrier catapult launch or arrested landing. However, what was said is that all UAVs...

Re: If we had just kept the F-22 production line funded...

Concerning the steam catapults and launching drones. Currently, the T-45 Goshawk trainer jet is launched all the time and has an empty weight of 10k and max of 14K. The X-47B Avenger has an empty weight of 14K and max of 44K. (Numbers from wiki) When warming up the catapults and testing them, we sho...

Re: 20 years away, and always will be

I think of hydrogen not as an energy source, but as an energy storage mechanism. Developing more efficient ways to create it and store it are what will lead to a hydrogen (vice fossil fuel) based economy. Of course, if you can generate and store electricity efficiently (solar/wind/fusion and capacit...

Re: First tier, second tier

Think about shipping. You could build a 50 kt ship that doesn't need to be refueled for months, years even. How about a space station with hundreds of mega watts of power available? Think about negotiations with Iran. "You say it is about energy production. How about we give you a fusion reactor and...

And thus why aircraft carriers remain relevant for the foreseeable future.

I have to say, Ladajo's description seems much more accurate.

Re: Can we contain the electrons only with the Magnetic fiel

In recirculation, what causes the electrons, once outside the magrid, to recirculate? hummmmmm. Isn't it the magnetic field lines? Soooo, if recirculation is the mechanism for "containing" the electrons, then isn't the magnetic field "containing" the electrons?

So the short answer IS yes.

When they start clearing trees and farming in Greenland again then we can say it's warmed up as much as a thousand years ago. I hope you are aren't seriously suggesting that Greenland did not have an extensive ice sheet 1000 years ago. Perhaps you forgot the "one hundred" that should be in front of...

Re: Upgrading the forum to phpBB 3 pretty soon

A small part of me is sad that there are not 100,000s of people registered on Talk-Polywell. Just us meager 1000 or so. I use to have some comfort in thinking Polywell was well populated. Now, not so much.

Even so, I like the upgrades!

Ok, let me be more verbose. While the catapult is not weight limited, the current structural capacities and aerodynamic qualities of today's non-Navy developmental and operational UAVs cannot handle the minimum settings on today's steam catapults. However, the Navy's UAV has been and will be launche...
