Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

Nice to have my opinions reinforced so promptly and crisply. I've given you a number of sane reasons why there is no need to take an apocalyptic view, which you have simply ignored. All the neutrals (if they still exist) are assuming that's because you have no rational responses. Well done. The para...

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

Name calling in the climate debate has to stop, and we have to engage seriously with each other to formulate a genuine consensus policy. There is no doubt that CO2 is a greenhouse gas. Pumping billions of tons of it into the atmosphere is a perturbation of the climate system which is best avoided. T...

Re: EM Drive

My BOE says 300 micro-Newtons will keep Cannae's 6U cubesat on station at 180km (very low altitude) forever.

1.2mN/Kw would only require a small solar panel to power it.

Re: Go For New Navy Funding To Finish

No, he'll likely appoint an Oil Man (Hamm) to Energy. Prediction: He won't go all-in on Fusion. But he isn't going to dismantle it either, even ITER. However, the proposition that he should slow that program to make room for some unique US startup companies in the same field sounds to me like nation...

Re: Go For New Navy Funding To Finish

Carpe Diem. Harold Hamm of Continental Resources and Robert Grady of Gryphon Investors are touted for Energy secretary, respectively favourite and second favourite. If someone can get a word in their ear/inbox suggesting diverting ITER funds to EMC2, LPP, Sorlox, Tri-Alpha, Helion, and making the si...

Well, he seems keen on spending on military technology. The 'emissions free' theme probably doesn't help. Sounds like some nimble footwork with the Powerpoint might be required....

Not sure what you mean. Their experiments and reactor design are pulsed, rather than steady state. What kind of stability are you talking about?

If you read their clarification with the view that 'EMDrive' means Shawyer's device, it makes perfect sense. They are simply saying that they are testing their own technology.

Re: SpaceX News

To round this out, wiki says only trace quantities of Carbon on the moon, so only liquid oxygen could come from there. (I guess unless some enterprising person can land a large carbonaceous chondrite there!). Seems like you need CH4+3O2 -> CO2+2H20, so 18 grams of methane for every 48 grams of oxyge...

Re: SpaceX News

Yes I saw that, but didn't hear mention of exporting fuel from Mars, just using it for return trips.

Anyway, in this context the premise is faulty - Musk's presentation shows $1.6M for each tanker trip to LEO with about 300T fuel, so the number is more like $2.4 per lb, rather than $10,000! (page 41)

Re: SpaceX News

Hmm... if the fuel cost from earth to LEO is ~$10000/lb, what is the cost from the Moon or Mars to LEO? Does that create a commercial opportunity to build a fuel station somewhere to service a very large demand for fuel in LEO? Is there enough carbon, oxygen and hydrogen on the Moon to make fuel the...

Re: EM Drive

Sadly, a lightbulb design that doesn't work won't prove very much on the concept of the electric lightbulb, but is disappointing. Has EMdrive been tested in space? If you want to go all-in speculation/conspiracy, check out the Operational History of the X37B OTV in Wiki. The thing was designed to sp...

Re: EM Drive

Can you quote me their claims of thrust? There are no press releases on their website with any claims that I can see. The force required to maintain orbit is not high (I think 30-230 micronewtons), but this has to be sustained over six months. If they are determined to cheat, they can certainly do t...

Re: Lawaranceville E-Newsletter

But to get to the full planned current of 2.8 MA, the inductance of other parts of the FF-1 circuit must be reduced, so more energy is available inside the vacuum chamber, and less is wasted in magnetic field energy outside the chamber. The research team has some concrete ideas of how to do this, b...
