Re: Lawaranceville E-Newsletter

I think the right way to view this offering is as a charitable donation that comes with a lottery ticket. Structurally, you might make 100 times your money with a probability less than 1 in 10000 - my guess. However, I thought it was worth supporting when it was pure charity and more so now. You cer...

Re: Applied Fusion Systems to build prototype reactor in 3 years

This is a wildly optimistic way to look at it, but you could equally ask why there is more than one company making IC engined cars. One way to answer: because the monopoly profits accruing to a single manufacturer would tempt in many competitors...

Re: EM Drive

I agree Shawyers theory appears to be rubbish. My opinion on the accounts is that Shawyer has spent many years and many hundreds of thousands of pounds testing his concept. He should know if it works or not. He is either right, criminal, or delusional. The remark about the B37b was meant to be mildl...

Re: EM Drive

Except that Shawyer has (probably) sunk his own money into his company, along with that of other people willing to give him indefinite term, interest free loans - close friends. He has been paying back for a couple of years, as disclosed in related party transactions. Read the last 10 years accounts...

Hi Maui! Yes, you'd think the US could manage the equivalent of a cup of coffee each per YEAR on fusion research. Put like that, I think my Saturday is going to end with a stiff drink....

Re: More Helion Energy news....

The $5 bn figure seems to be politicians peddling a view by picking at the tax treatment of oil and gas and calling various things subsidies and tax breaks. In these days of partisan non-facts, it has no credibility. Every company has allowable costs for tax purposes. The belief that this amounts to...

Re: Mach Effect progress

We're getting a distance from the Mach effect, but one last thought. Suppose the LGMs know they will arrive in 1000 years and are expecting a fair fight. If they can reduce economic growth on Earth by 0.3% pa, we will be 20 times poorer than we would have been by the time they get here. No longer a ...

Re: Mach Effect progress

Here's a book plot for you. Intelligence is transient: farming has removed all selection pressure, and brain size is already heading south very fast. All the LGMs have to do is slow progress enough, and they have a defence strategy. So: they regulate away nuclear power, nuclear rockets. Make sure fu...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )

This response from Thorcon on the 'drain event'. After a drain , the normal procedure is to use one of the drain tank's three fluidic pumps to transfer the fuelsalt to either a) back into this Can's primary loop, or b) to the other Can in this PMOD's, or c) to the PMOD's fuelsalt transfer cask. A dr...

...first P-11B fusion in small machines, then large, followed by D-D fusion, solar/ wind, D-T in smaller machines, thorium and liquid salt fission, D-T fusion in large machines similar to ITAR, and finally classical fission.... Interesting list, and seems sensible. Solar/Wind without batteries is m...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )

The Thorcon FDT is below the 'can', which contains the reaction vessel and primary cooling circuit. The facility includes a 400 ton hoist to remove and replace the can as a unit. Once the can is removed, there is no obvious reason why the exposed FDT could not also be lifted out and reprocessed at a...

Re: LENR Is Real

If there is any real point to my post, it is the observation that getting rid of 1MW of heat isn't really that hard. With a closed system maybe it is hard, but nobody made that a rule.

Re: LENR Is Real

I wouldn't want anyone to think that I hold a candle for Rossi, but consider this. Specific heat of water is 4.2 J/Calorie. So if you raise water temperature by 90 C, you use 90x4.2x1000 = 378K J/kg. So the required flow for 1M J/s becomes 2.64 kg/s, which is an average velocity of 0.38 m/s through ...

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2017/02/22/fear-of-nuclear-part-2/ A bunch of stuff I didn't know about the "linear no threshold" (LNT) hypothesis on radiation induced cancer, and how experts disagree. Also very interesting datapoint a on the lack of excess cancers due to higher background radiation, a...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )

The Thorcon reactor (root post) design has a plug at the low point of the primary fuel flow circuit, i.e. the flow of fission reactant. They say that if the flow overheats, the plug melts, and the reactant flows into a tub below called the 'Fuelsalt Drain Tank' (FDT). They make a point of saying tha...
