Re: Jäderberg future power - Swedish fusion startup

Patent A is listed as filed Nov-20 and published Nov-22. Patent B is listed as filed Nov-21 and published May-22. I don't know if the different patent offices confuse things or not. The publishing date is referring to the US publication only. Patent A: Application: EP19208258.4 of Nov. 11, 2019 WIP...

Re: Jäderberg future power - Swedish fusion startup

Actually these are two different patents, as the URLs seem to imply: Mine above is ...patent/20220367069 call this patent A Yours is ...patent/WO2022101356A1..... call this patent B and leaving aside the reference numbers, the text is different! You are totally right, I didn't notice that their ori...

Re: Jäderberg future power - Swedish fusion startup

Found this, patent application from 2020 https://patents.justia.com/patent/20220367069 Added: the diagrams seem to me to be MIA. Maybe someone familiar might find the patent application at USTPO: the site is greek to me. Nice finding. The PDF of the patent with drawings is available here. As I was ...

Re: Jäderberg future power - Swedish fusion startup

A mix of older ideas with a twist of innovation, so I would not hold my breath for exceptional plasma stability. Unless they discovered some unique self stabilizing behavior in this "convex" configuration they will suffer from the same issues as everyone else. Anyhow is still nice to see newer ideas...

Re: material science advancements

Indeed, in general the big benefit of an increased field is the smoothing and prevention of the onset of instabilities and thus Tokamaks (especially the spherical ones) will get a great boost in performances. Regarding Polywell, I need to clarify before that to me the whole idea of the High Beta reg...

Re: Jäderberg future power - Swedish fusion startup

Hopefully they will disclose some details about the idea and the road they intend to explore. Looking forward to it.

Re: material science advancements

Increased field strength due to HTSC are able to resolve most of the previous issues. But is also true that those stronger magnets are also solving most of the issues in older ideas and enabling new ideas. In my opinion the race at this point is just to who will be able to offer a design at an econo...

Re: ZAP Energy News

I will never get bored of repeating that we should always beware of scaling plateau in uncharted areas. This issue has been the major stopover of virtually every fusion tech out there for the past 40 years and the main cause of the popular belief that "fusion is always 20 years in future"..... The ...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

So heard back from David (they are super busy with deliveries of Polaris parts) and as I understand it, for n=2 instabilities radius is what is important. Onset of rotation scales similar to particle confinement time. At least rs^2.1 if not stronger. Yes, confinement time in FRC is scaling with rs^...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

There is more to stability than 'FRC Plasma'. Temperature for example is important, as plasma Temp increases so does stability. [.....] I would presume that Helion realized what worked early on. Indeed this is a possibility, even if simply increasing temperature will not inherently ensure a stable ...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Well, I am not sure to what point he is referring to, but I do not think that TAE can be considered a small IPA plasma, and they are suffering n=2 instabilities like every other FRC experiment so far. This is also the reason why they need to employ plasma guns and neutral beams to stabilize and kee...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Very brief response from David Kirtley on the short life of FRCs claimed by Giorgio: "Not sure what they are talking about. That might have been true for little IPA- sized plasmas." Trying to get some more info with hopefully some numbers for Trenta, but he has been super busy. So no promises. Well...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

On the other hand, plasma compression is unproven for Zap, & they admit that their latest modeling is where their confidence lies. Also, their machine is not that expensive to build & the reason their time line for Q>1 is short (2023 as I recall, & their machine is up & running as we speak). So, I ...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Again, it might as well be that they solved the issue and didn't want to disclose it, no one knows, but the issue is real and is there from 15 years waiting to be solved as it is a roadblock for everyone working with FRCs and hoping to get to Q>1. Is this what Dennis Whyte has in mind when he says ...
