So the deal is: if you don't want to deal with right wing politics it is best (in general) to avoid engineering forums. Wait, why is this an engineering forum? Wouldn't it be more of a physics forum? Or, considering that the actual work on polywell is going on elsewhere, isn't it just a forum based...

And one burden not yet mentioned is the loss of business when small businesses choose not to buy stuff from other small businesses because of the pain to stay in compliance. Yeah, I was thinking about that. It makes you want to shop around if you can stay under $600 for each business you buy from. ...

You are correct, I have not. Perhaps with more experience I would appreciate just how much pizza a one-man business has to buy. But like most Americans, I am no stranger to bureaucracy. Paperwork is part of the modern way of life - and we all do it on our "own time and dime". Taxes, court forms, DMV...

Just bow to the hat William Tell. Time to sell the hat and buy more shoes. I'm not debating that this is an annoyance. But "This Government Never Misses a Chance to Screw the Little Guy ? What the hell? This is a bigger headache for the big guys. This is a drain on the whole country when you look a...

because if you can make time to fill out a few forms, you can use that same time to make some money.
No, actually I can't. It's called a salary. I doubt that most small business owners have the capacity to turn hours into cash at will, as well.

You buy $600+ worth of pizza every year? As a business expense? What the hell sort of consulting do you do? It won't cost you $500. You'll just spend another sleepless night working. Or more like another few hours, actually. Getting 10-20 tax ID's and filling out nearly identical forms doesn't soun...

I was a B student. That didn't stop me from going to grad school, where I have that same contempt for my students. Let's be very clear: they deserve it. Moreover, I remember being a B student. It wasn't anything to be proud of; it simply meant I wasn't as responsible and didn't try as hard. I don't ...

Runaway spending has been going on a long time. The problem is the zero sum game both parrties play, or if you think that's inevitable, the problem is the two party system period. If both parties worked together and raised taxes, the deficit would be solved. But if the party in power makes such a mo...

Re: lurking no more

Not at all to Chu's surprise, some other journal with some relevance to the subject printed an article with his exact claim, but made by someone else, two weeks before Chu's original article was to be published. Then, right at the deadline for submitting minor typographical corrections (3 days I th...

Yeah, 20 levels of evil is a pretty big difference. They're not even in the same order of magnitude. It's like seeing someone with a pet crocodile and saying, "OMFG! It's Godzilla! You fool, you'll kill us all!" You might have legitimate reasons to feel he shouldn't have a crocodile, but it won't de...

I guess it must have been five years ago now. The electric tokamak was still running, and a nice fellow gave me a little tour of the lab. I thought they were being remarkably accomodating given that I didn't schedule an appointment or anything. I was there for another purpose entirely. I walked into...

Ever see the movie Watchmen? Humanity is united after a mastermind nukes several cities and frames a godlike superhero as the common enemy of mankind. In the original graphic novels (I'm told), the plot went that the mastermind instead framed fictional aliens. It's much better than really being atta...
