Re: TAE completes first tests of hydrogen-boron fuel cycle

Thanks Giorgio, I might have chance to rrad tgat on the train later today. A propos not very much, the charge to mass ratio of boron is only slightly less than D, and the charge to mass ratio of 1H is radically higher than T. On the face of it magnetic confinement ought to be more effective for a P1...

Re: TAE completes first tests of hydrogen-boron fuel cycle

Here is a link to the article on raised p11B fusion rates (from 2019) - up 30%. 'Fraid I don't have access to the full text to know what that really means.

Re: TAE completes first tests of hydrogen-boron fuel cycle

I guess the big news is in the Nature paper: that updated cross-sections mean that a pB11 plasma can reach ignition. Previously mainstream wisdom was that the fuel was a dead-end inna stable plasma because Brehmstralung losses would exceed fusion power. ‘Diagnostically significant’ fusion alphas mig...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Hi - two criticisms of Helion surfaced yesterday. I don’t give them much credence, but woukd appreciate a clear response if anyone has one. 1) the highly reactive T will ‘scavenge’ D from the plasma, making the reaction quite neutonic even in He3 operation. 2) the generation of He3 from D will consu...

How short are the pulses on the coils on the acceleration section?

Wouldn't a 20 Tesla field require superconducting coils and cryogenic cooling?
Not for a pulsed system.
Took a while to notice, but if you had cryogenic superconducting coils in a pulsed system, what kind of peak fields might be achieved?

Re: World-first "impossible" rotating detonation engine fires up

Got me thinking. Stick for a minute with ISP 410 and SSTO. With Giorgio’s numbers of a 100T craft, 10T payload, and 30T return fuel, I calculate that if you can pick up the return fuel in LEO, you save 269 T of launch fuel. If you can ship it there from the moon in a 5T craft, and return the craft t...

Re: Lawaranceville E-Newsletter

I don’t see many barriers to trying another fill gas. IIRC they already bought DecaBorane.

I guess they might want to prove out the new setup by beating some of their old records with Deuterium before moving on. Could take a while if that’s what you meant….

Re: Jäderberg future power - Swedish fusion startup

What is amazing is the ‘classical’ feel of this stuff. I don’t really see why this couldn’t have been designed in 1955. So OK, simulation would have been minimal, but it could have been tried.

Is there any critical tech which is enabling this now?

Re: Jäderberg future power - Swedish fusion startup

Reading the patent A: quite impressed that they simulate confinement of 3.5 MeV alpha particles in quasi-stable orbits in their containment device, as well as 100 keV deuterons. Don't know plasma simulation enough (at all) to know if what they have done is reasonable. Less impressed that it is 25M d...
