Re: SpaceX News
And I forgot about it until an hour after launch. *sigh* Oh, well. Looks like the geosynchronous transfer orbit was achieved, and the first stage successfully landed for a second time. I'd call that something worth watching.

Re: SpaceX News
It will definitely save on fuel for the landing if they don't try to reverse the ballistic arc. And that means more for putting the second stage where they want it. Hopefully the next one won't be on a day I work (or the night before), so I'll have a chance to see how it goes as it happens.

Re: SpaceX News
It looks like the SpaceX launch went off fine this morning, after being scrubbed on Tuesday morning due to high winds.

Cost Plus, and the habit of following a policy of "you can't have money for that, its not in the budget" for every month of the year except September, in which case the 'policy' is "we have X$ left in the budget, make sure to spend ALL of it, or we won't get that unspent money in next years budget".

Re: SpaceX News
Next SpaceX launch currently scheduled for 14 March at 0134 eastern time (0634Z). The launch window is from 0134 to 0404 eastern time. This is the EchoStar 23 launch into a geosynchronous transfer orbit, and the first stage is apparently the last expendable F9, having no grid fins or legs to land on.

Re: SpaceX News
My understanding is that SpaceX is that kind of thing. Musk wants to personally go to Mars, and SpaceX is his way of doing it himself. Oh, and to make some money helping other folks get into orbit/space while he's doing it.

Red sprites, based on where they occur, were the first thing I thought of when looking up info on TGFs.

CRS 10 launch should happen this morning in a bit over an hour. Not sure who all will see this before then, but just in case: http://www.spacex.com/webcast -- SpaceX webcast (which will start showing stuff at ~0900 central) https://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html#public -- NASA TV website ...

Re: Magnetic forces are favored?
You've still got pretty much the same interstellar medium of (mostly) monotonic hydrogen, even if it is measured in cubic meters per atom, so even in the spaces farthest from "everything", you would get matter/anti-matter reactions (which are by definition, noticeable) around any clump of anti-matte...

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change
On EV: 30 mpg I make about 5.3 cents per mile for fuel at $60/bbl. I think grid power is something like 2 cents a mile for EV. I'm not sure of the kWh prices, but my Volt is ~45mi per 11kWh of charge used (~4mi/kWh) on average. On the other hand, just having the batteries for regenerative braking t...

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change
i don't think you understand. There is no "debate". If you want to learn about climate science, there are plenty of resources to available. There are even courses available at a university. But you're not going to learn anything so long as you think you know everything. We're not going to do this: ...

Re: SpaceX News
My (limited) understanding of the problem is that it only became an issue with their recent switch to "super" cooled LOX. At "normal" LOX temperatures, which all of their launches prior to this year used, the problem does not occur. Looks like both SpaceX and I were a bit optimistic about their retu...
