Re: SpaceX News

Better to use the massive dampers currently employed at the top of skyscrapers. Much higher density than sea water (concrete or metals if you like) and no messy plumbing other than the hydraulics.

Re: Police Brutality Statistics

@GIThruster:

I had forgotten about Steadicams, but I don't want to carry all of that gear around with me in casual situations. By shoulder mounted, I should have specified sitting on my shoulder like a bird, but without the danger of poop.

I also understand Steadicam use is a difficult art.

Re: Police Brutality Statistics

I've seen apps which can automatically upload video to the cloud. Good plan when the police officers want to confiscate your phone, illegally, and delete the video you have lawfully recorded. I have read on-line efforts encouraging citizens to record police interactions which are going badly. Since ...

Something Funny About Elemental Boron - Disorder

Chemist Discovers New Information About Elemental Boron "Boron's stable structure has disorder, and that was surprising to learn. Nature likes things more orderly," explains White, a professor with Dalhousie's Faculty of Science. "It is especially surprising that the disordered form remains stable a...

No new information I can see, though.

Re: Why Isn't Wall Street in Jail?

From an old article: "Why Only One Top Banker Went to Jail for the Financial Crisis" - NY Times 30 April 2014 A summary from topic sentences: "American financial history has generally unfolded as a series of booms followed by busts followed by crackdowns." "The credit crisis of 2008 dwarfed those (e...

Re: European Energy Independence from Russia

Perhaps not such a big problem after all. Still, losing Russia's contribution in the middle of winter would be a problem... "The EU has diversified its sources of gas considerably since the 1990s. More than 80 per cent of the growth in imports now comes from countries other than Russia - especially ...

European Energy Independence from Russia

Is anyone in Europe talking about it seriously?

Since Russia supplies a lot of Europe's natural gas and oil, any organized resistance by the Western Europeans to Vladimir Putin's protection of the russophones in Ukraine is endangered by needing not to make the Russians too angry.

No, but neither are babies. These are first- or second-generation efforts at bio-mimicry of the aeronautical sort. The later generations may end up indistinguishable from their biological antecedents, at least from a distance. Ubiquitous surveillance, anyone? Imagine the possibilities! Drug wars won...

Re: Skynet is coming.

It's past time to stop posting on this subject! With Diogenes last find, Skynet will have the penultimate technology needed to create Terminators. The remaining, of course, is energy storage with sufficient energy and power density... Let's hope we don't provide that also. In another vein, the USN i...
