Progressives would like us to forget their past fondness for Eugenics, after all, their scientific heart was in the right place.
I just can't see any relation between what you wrote and what you quoted.

Re: The Magician's Twin:C.S.Lewis and the Case against Scien

Ignoring the horrible musical interludes, I think the video makes some really good points (and some bad ones, when it brings up specific scientific theories). Science can only describe, it's not equipped to prescribe nor to proscribe.

Re: Free energy not all good?

Release too much cheap energy as heat into the lower atmosphere, and global warming will indeed become a problem. I remember reading a study on that once, though it saw the point where this might become an issue a few centuries in the future.

Re: Latest drug addict loons.

I'm not suggesting there should be no tolerance for it. I think we need to be extremely tolerant of it and I can certainly see situations where I'd off myself, but that is not the same as to say there should be an official sanctioning of it for that removes the notion that humanity is sacred and th...

Re: Latest drug addict loons.

For the same reasons that we don't approve of prostitution--in order to do so, we have to agree to devalue humanity. We would be essentially removing the high bar of social expectation and promoting everyone rush to the bottom. Like it or not, Western Civilization is what it is--the flowering of hu...

Re: Latest drug addict loons.

It is really just people seeking approval for what they want to do. It's no different than the gay community fighting not for equal legal rights but for the term "married". They want approval for their behavior. In the case of suicide, the approval is for the sake of the survivors surrounding the p...

Does that mean that the field lines (arrows) going towards the center are concentrated along the two central axes and thus not represented by the sample points shown in the plot?

If Christianity "puts an end to sexism" why didn't it do so for the better part of two millennia?

So is Holtzclaw guilty until proven innocent?

Roosevelt had a point. On the other hand, the government is bound by its employees as it's the government's obligation to create the conditions for enough people to want to work for it. Public employees still have the fundamental right to quit.

Without sufficient public outrage Obama might indeed lack the actual power to do anything about it, making irrelevant the question of whether he wants to.

And note, it is worth whatever it is worth (a launch is $60M so $15M for the first stage seems a fair guess) it saves $15M on EACH launch its reused. It could be reused 20X or thrown out on the first use. If they can be reused 15XEach, that stage is really worth $200M. Are you so sure you'd throw i...

Re: Go Forth And Prosper

Us Forth guys get around all that by putting 144 cores on a chip. The cores are async so if they have nothing to do they do nothing. You only pay for power that is doing useful work. $20 a pop in lots of 10. 86.4GIPS peak. IIRC ~100ma @ 1.8 V when all the cores are computing. Nothing else even come...

Re: Go Forth And Prosper

Well OK you don't like RPN. HP sold quite a few calculators with that model. In the computer you have to have the two arguments before you can do anything with them. Every single compiler is RPN. Forth just does you the favor of making that explicit. You don't like it? Don't use it. However you are...

Re: Go Forth And Prosper

PN/RPN may have the benefit of not having to type parentheses, but the visual representation should still have a clear grouping of sub-expressions. If you are used to reading RPN it is pretty clear. And there are things you can do to help clarity. Of course there are things you can do to help clari...
