Nice video indeed.
It will be be darn interesting to see the results of the 20 Tesla magnet on that DEMO4 test machine. If it follows the theoretical prediction than ST-F1 machine might indeed be the first fusion reactor of humanity.

Absolutely true.Munchausen wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 5:29 pmBetter performance is always benificial. One way or the other.
I was just pointing out that those are not data from a real machine for now but just the results of a numerical simulation, with all the limits and pitfalls of simulations.

Re: Spherical Tokamaks
I agree with that, but it shows that there is a path forward to do this IF engineering challenges can be resolved. Clearly there is a lower limit to the how small it can get, but it is still better than that ITER monstrosity, likely even better than ARC. Of course I fully agree. My concerns are mai...

"We find that for similar values of field and fusion power, but smaller volume, STs can have nTτΕ up to a factor of three higher and Qfus an order of magnitude higher than CTs." Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance
Yes, input current needs can eventually be managed if they are able to reduce the radius of the pinch, so the MHD instabilities will be the beast to tame. I am also very happy to hear that they have enough funds to move on the research to clarify if they can make it feasible. Let's wait and see what...

Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance
Good and fairly recent presentation by Uri Shumlak: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nHKEa_Bxh4d_JhWo7F6vJR69A5FQFmFX/view Thanks, it was a very interesting video. There is lot of new info that I didn't know into this presentation, it helped to clear some doubts I had, but it strengthened some othe...

Re: Creating a magnetic field at a distance
"By emulating a magnetic source at distance, one would be able to generate magnetic potential landscapes with higher gradients at the desired target position resulting in tighter traps." Please excuse my ignorance, but what confinement method could be better than a magnetic field occuring out of not...

Re: Creating a magnetic field at a distance
and I haven't read the paper. Here is the paper for anyone interested in reading it: Tailoring magnetic fields in inaccessible regions.pdf The link is valid for 14 days. If is is as described it is a neat finding plenty of potential applications, but the paper I got is lacking of the " supplementar...

Re: Creating a magnetic field at a distance
And Lentz (2020) explicitly suggested confined plasma as a gravitational source in his energy-condition-respecting superluminal soliton. It is an interesting theoretical paper but energy requirements for now are in the same range as Alcubierre drive, so it is out of our technological testing possib...

Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance
Considering the importance of the issues (and the constant need of research funds they have) I would have expected them to rise to general attention the overcoming of this issue as a major point in favor of financing their tech. Anyhow, I like your optimism and I deeply wish you to be totally right ...

Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance
I am quoting that 2006 paper because is the only paper where they mention the issue. After this paper in no other public paper or presentation that I have read the thermalization issue was ever mentioned as "overcome" or "tested" or "solved". The scaling laws in the ZAP-HD and FuZE machines are hold...

Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance
Not to interrupt you gentlemen's interesting technical discourse but what about a compromise? Say one of those small modular nuclear reactors of the type that Trump just approved funding for? What me and Skipjack are digressing about is not on the type of power reactor that is needed but on the nee...

Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance
I think those are already included in the design of the ZAP, but you still need to charge them from a source before the reactor first shot and also in any event when there is not enough energy charge to allow for another shot. I disagree with that. We agree that we disagree, we will just need to wa...

Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance
First, the reason why I added a fission reactor is that you need anyhow enough electrical power to "start" the first fusion reaction, so you need anyhow a secondary continuous and reliable electrical source whenever you need to start the reactor. Capacitor bank. I think those are already included i...

Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance
Ok, why such a huge ship? 30,000 tonnes is quite big, IMHO, especially when using only one engine (engine mass is not really that relevant). Would have to agree: I think we will have to agree before if we are doing a "theoretical analysis" based on yet to come technologies or implementing a practic...
