Anyway, landing large cargoes on Mars is much harder then is usually admitted. :( Two tonnes is about the max possible for current landing methods, maybe scaling up to 10-20 tonnes for next generation methods, and the Great Ghoul of Space still eats 60% of the missions sent. I thought only the section from cockpit and forward looked more recent than mid/late 50s. The overall wing shape definitely looked only a decade or so post-war.

The real support was getting it from suspiciously flawed theoreticaly, to ugly duckling, to underdog, to paradigm shifting.. EMC2 did (or will have done) that, not any party.

I think Polywell is really not that bad. Why not Bussard Polywell? Everyone would know it's a fusion reactor, cause that's what it is.. It would have Bussard in it, would be pretty simple, doesn't really take much effort to say (tho it's not completely fluid either), and anyone curious would figure ...

My gut feeling is that if the public first hears about it with a name simple enough, like said above, in tandem with some mention that the design and/or the power output/kWh cost is a whole new story from the previous or other designs, then there's a much better chance that people will remember a mo...

All the public needs to see is a clear enough contrast between fusion or even tokamaks and polywell, for it to be undeniably not just a "nuke".
