Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

Sounds like decent news. The obvious questions are what is the power factor of each generation type, I.e how many MWh will each actually deliver in a year - intermittency again. And questions on regulation - is there regulation artificially depressing the load factor on gas/ raising it on renewables...

Re: EM Drive

I guess we'll see. The videos of Paul March, the man who made the measurements, are long but interesting. It's on SSI.org, first of the day 2 videos. He is obviously convinced, maybe to be expected.

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

Maui - dammit, I just lost 90 minutes worth of typing a response! I'm sorry but I don't have time to repeat it (might be a good thing)! So, short this time: rise above it. State your position and disengage if the discussion is impossible. Avoid insults and attacks. There is no global conspiracy, but...

Re: EM Drive

ScottL - believe it when we see it is right, but like you and anyone with any imagination, I'm hoping it's real. I was just responding narrowly to the suggestion that it's a photon rocket. The thrust levels are too high. In fact, that's why it's controversial, come to think of it. Also, if my calcul...

Re: EM Drive

The ratio of thrust to power in reported by Shawyer and others is way above a photon rocket. Eagleworks Labs was on the low side of the reports, and they reported 1.2 mN/kW. A perfect photon rocket is 3.33 micro-Newtons/kW.

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

On EV: 30 mpg I make about 5.3 cents per mile for fuel at $60/bbl. I think grid power is something like 2 cents a mile for EV. The numbers may well be off, but clearly there is point where there is insufficient cost advantage for EV to defray the capital cost of the battery. Yes, the dynamics of oil...

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

I'm an optimist, and I agree with you that many of these problems will be solved. The policy questions circulate around what governments should do. I'm very relaxed about the government spending $100bn on relevant research which should accelerate carbon reduction. I'm really not relaxed about making...

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

Maui - thanks. Contact with one apparently sane human being makes trying to communicate worthwhile. No, I'm not going to make a case for everyone with the same label as me. You can make your own judgements. I'm forced to confess to an overly sweeping generalisation regarding the character of sceptic...

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

Apologies: I'm sure my use of the term 'ludicrous' may have caused offence. I had in mind the throw away line about 'billions of deaths', which is obviously a measured, peer-reviewed, near as certain statement as you can get. And of course, none of the responses to me were remotely offensive. Furthe...

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

Nice to have my opinions reinforced so promptly and crisply. I've given you a number of sane reasons why there is no need to take an apocalyptic view, which you have simply ignored. All the neutrals (if they still exist) are assuming that's because you have no rational responses. Well done. The para...

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

Name calling in the climate debate has to stop, and we have to engage seriously with each other to formulate a genuine consensus policy. There is no doubt that CO2 is a greenhouse gas. Pumping billions of tons of it into the atmosphere is a perturbation of the climate system which is best avoided. T...

Re: EM Drive

My BOE says 300 micro-Newtons will keep Cannae's 6U cubesat on station at 180km (very low altitude) forever.

1.2mN/Kw would only require a small solar panel to power it.

Re: Go For New Navy Funding To Finish

No, he'll likely appoint an Oil Man (Hamm) to Energy. Prediction: He won't go all-in on Fusion. But he isn't going to dismantle it either, even ITER. However, the proposition that he should slow that program to make room for some unique US startup companies in the same field sounds to me like nation...

Re: Go For New Navy Funding To Finish

Carpe Diem. Harold Hamm of Continental Resources and Robert Grady of Gryphon Investors are touted for Energy secretary, respectively favourite and second favourite. If someone can get a word in their ear/inbox suggesting diverting ITER funds to EMC2, LPP, Sorlox, Tri-Alpha, Helion, and making the si...
