Re: Mach Effect progress

We're getting a distance from the Mach effect, but one last thought. Suppose the LGMs know they will arrive in 1000 years and are expecting a fair fight. If they can reduce economic growth on Earth by 0.3% pa, we will be 20 times poorer than we would have been by the time they get here. No longer a ...

Re: Mach Effect progress

Here's a book plot for you. Intelligence is transient: farming has removed all selection pressure, and brain size is already heading south very fast. All the LGMs have to do is slow progress enough, and they have a defence strategy. So: they regulate away nuclear power, nuclear rockets. Make sure fu...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )

This response from Thorcon on the 'drain event'. After a drain , the normal procedure is to use one of the drain tank's three fluidic pumps to transfer the fuelsalt to either a) back into this Can's primary loop, or b) to the other Can in this PMOD's, or c) to the PMOD's fuelsalt transfer cask. A dr...

...first P-11B fusion in small machines, then large, followed by D-D fusion, solar/ wind, D-T in smaller machines, thorium and liquid salt fission, D-T fusion in large machines similar to ITAR, and finally classical fission.... Interesting list, and seems sensible. Solar/Wind without batteries is m...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )

The Thorcon FDT is below the 'can', which contains the reaction vessel and primary cooling circuit. The facility includes a 400 ton hoist to remove and replace the can as a unit. Once the can is removed, there is no obvious reason why the exposed FDT could not also be lifted out and reprocessed at a...

Re: LENR Is Real

If there is any real point to my post, it is the observation that getting rid of 1MW of heat isn't really that hard. With a closed system maybe it is hard, but nobody made that a rule.

Re: LENR Is Real

I wouldn't want anyone to think that I hold a candle for Rossi, but consider this. Specific heat of water is 4.2 J/Calorie. So if you raise water temperature by 90 C, you use 90x4.2x1000 = 378K J/kg. So the required flow for 1M J/s becomes 2.64 kg/s, which is an average velocity of 0.38 m/s through ...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2017/02/22/fear-of-nuclear-part-2/ A bunch of stuff I didn't know about the "linear no threshold" (LNT) hypothesis on radiation induced cancer, and how experts disagree. Also very interesting datapoint a on the lack of excess cancers due to higher background radiation, a...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )

The Thorcon reactor (root post) design has a plug at the low point of the primary fuel flow circuit, i.e. the flow of fission reactant. They say that if the flow overheats, the plug melts, and the reactant flows into a tub below called the 'Fuelsalt Drain Tank' (FDT). They make a point of saying tha...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )

The root post link says a great deal about cost. They go through an inventory of required materials and construction costs and argue that power from their plant should cost 3.x cents a kWh, versus 5.y for coal. They discuss the difference between 'should cost' and 'did cost' and argue that the diffe...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )

Really interesting. If you believe this, nuclear is cheaper than coal, but for regulation. They claim that was the actual experience in the US before TMI. They also describe the passive safety features and claim the plant is 'walk away safe'. Also eye catching is the claim that a decent production f...

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

Check this out: https://wattsupwiththat.com/2017/01/14/noaa-jumps-the-shark-in-tampa-bay/ Willis seems diligent and level-headed, not prone to wilder flights of skepticism. Here we have a government science body causing real economic damage by predicting the utterly implausible, on the basis of prec...

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

Maui - I'm sorry for the sideways remark about food stamps. It was an attempt to make people busy advocating higher electricity prices to reflect on the consequences of their policies. On reflection let's not make this thread busy by getting into US politics (as well)! Your remark on sea walls highl...

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

Yes, I was taught about pumped storage when I was in school, in the 70's. There was a site Dinorwig (sp?) in Wales. Don't know if much has happened since. The sites are very specialised. You need a big lake you don't mind rapidly draining and filling at the top of a nice big mountain. I guess with f...

Re: Bill Gates is heading a $1 billion venture fund to combat climate change

Yes, I agree on the distributed solar 2gw, that's what it said. It also said the range of power factors at 30-70%, from renewables to fossil plants. Yes on batteries too. When the per kWh costs of plant+fuel for non-renewables is more than plant+batteries for renewables, it has to be game-over. Plan...
