RobL (or anyone else) am I mising something here? I can't work out why parallel is saying these weird things? I thought maybe he is using accuracy in a non-technical sense (accuracy of measurement rather than accuracy of equipment) and considering cases of differential measurement. Then resolution ...

tomclarke, it is very unclear how accurate is this IR camera at measuring surface temperature. You'd need to look in detail at the camera spec, and do a sensitivity analysis. then you'd need to check it was properly calibrated... Optris industrial pyrometers, depending on model, appear to have a re...

So ha...

Tom, in terms of the entropy argument Jurek Dędor on the other forum said that: Also, I'm not entirely clear on why it would act as an arbitrarily large source of essentially free energy locally... wouldn't you have to keep powering it in order for it to keep accelerating and thereby producing work...

Thanks GIThruster. Excellent summary, and it appears grounds for hope of big advances.

I can't see much reason to answer any of these people. Robert is making a point without a point. No one thinks the current test device is a commercial prototype so the point of his little calculation seems to be self indulgence. Self indulgent? Moi? :) For my own curiosity I did some basic calculat...

A bigger explanation and links for heavy ion fusion. http://www.talk-polywell.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3603 In short appears to require no breakthroughs, very high gains, probably lower build costs than ITER, efficient drivers, and high conversion efficiencies but only works in huge sizes (~100 GW) us...

I am sure that most of you have heard of Kelly Johnson, Head of Skunk works and IMHO one of greatest engineers in history. He had a set of 14 written rules for running projects and a 15th rule that he passed on by word of mouth: "Starve before doing business with the damned Navy. They don't know wha...

Ask, and ye shall receive... https://www.neco.navy.mil/synopsis_file/N6893609C0125%20_Redacted_JA.pdf A very good read indeed. So if I read correctly funding of an additional $5.3million over next 2 years to work on the problem of pumping electrons into the Polywell (guess that supports 5-15 staff)...

Bad idea because of the high temp required. Practical limit for economic solar concentrating mirrors is about 2500x solar concentration. With solar insolation of normally 0.4-0.9kW/m² that means you get about 1000-2300kW/m² solar input to your receiver. But with a 1700°C receiver temperature you are...

Heavy Ion Fusion

Haven't seen this come up around here before, but in the attached video a pretty good case is made for heavy ion fusion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2emKoMgZ03U http://www.fusionpowercorporation.com/corporation need to be big to overcome the ignition requirements - end up with a 8-10km long linea...

Two supports must be a better solution than three or four due to the reduced total area to prevent ions and electrons hitting, as well as less area to cool. Each of the two supports will be less than 40% thicker than 4 supports would be to carry the same current and coolant with proportionally less ...

Rossi has just admitted that he lied about shipping the 1MW unit (though of course he says it was a mistranslation, but unfortunately for him it was more than one statement on more than one occasion). He also said he was attending the US customer's site, to assist with the install and commissioning....

I don't find it splitting hairs in the least. By your definition, they're all "nuclear" so I can substitute fusion for fission and say we have fusion plants powering our nation, which would be patently false. At some point people have to call it as it is and I think we're getting to that point. Wit...
