Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )

In our neck of the woods, we have an abundance of gas from fracking. The most recent powerplant to be built in our area is natural gas fired. This has, if I understand it, a mix of steam and gas turbines. The gas turbines are like turboprop engines ... can throttle up our down quickly. Compare this...

Re: What the heck is this GreenNh3

NH3 is not appreciably more or less dangerous than gasoline Having worked with anhydrous ammonia I am going to disagree with you. It in my opinion is not for the layperson a safe option. And as for being lighter than air that is true only when it warms up to room temperature. when first released th...

Re: What the heck is this GreenNh3

NH3 is not appreciably more or less dangerous than gasoline. It is considerably lighter than air, dissipates upward, and is difficult to ignite. It is fairly harmless at low concentrations, and the odor alone will drive people to a safe distance. There is more information at the NH3 Fuel Association...

Re: Hyperloop Technologies

The main reason is the low rolling resistance of steel wheels on steel rails under heavy loads. The inline aerodynamics helps, but it's lower rolling friction, not lower air friction, where the real advantage is. The low rolling resistance on steel rail is often misrepresented and there is an error...

Re: Firefly News

Reaction Engines appears to be doing quite well. The pre-cooler which is the truly novel piece enabling their revolutionary engine has been tested, and further studies have found the Skylon concept to be sound. It is a solid idea with many fundamental advantages over conventional chemical rocketry....

Kite, I agree that we should be building LFTRs, but the idiot politicians and the beaurocrats in the NRC are doing their best to prevent it from happening. Let's not forget the Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu. He is perfectly well aware of the potential of MSRs, but for whatever reason, he spouts t...

Re: Thoughts on Thorium Molten Salt Reactors?

I would prefer it if we can get our power from pB11 aneutronic fusion... It it turns out that polywell, and FRC, and DPF, etc all prove in-feasible (for any type of positive power generation for any type of fusion), then the next best thing we have going would likely be either LFTR and/or the IFR. ...

I have just one question, who is "we" and who is "they?" And where do "I" stand in all this? Well, it sounds like my words were wasted, and indeed there were a few too many. I'm curious what value you think that video has though. Do you think that the rich need defendi...

What a disgusting display of ignorance. Wether this smug tool even realizes that he is one, I would have expected better here. How ignorant or shameless must one be to propagate this nonsense? Given that this is an energy board, I will assume that it is the latter, in which case, please take it else...

Does anyone know what the fuel composition and burn up ratio are in these reactors? I can't imagine it would be very high, and encasing the fuel in nearly* indestructible pebbles would seem likely to make reprocessing very difficult. If that is the case, then this design looks like a dead end. * The...

I'm not really sure what can fix the nuclear situation outside of addressing the ignorance surrounding it. Even with the safety record of nuclear, the current course is not sustainable, and the possibilities, however unlikely, are clearly terrifying. Nuclear needs a fresh start, and the potential sa...

Dumb question: Why aren't the water pumps steam powered? Or at least why isn't there such a backup system? I believe I made such a suggestion in my post about survivability being seperation and redundancy of toughened systems, and got pilloried for suggesting such an expensive design. I think that ...

And SBWRs are better yet and ESBWRs are even more so and they are ALL "STUPID technology". Any technology that causes the need to store MASSIVE amounts of "waste" that is the combination of short lived fusion products and long lived actinides is JPS (just plain stupid). All soli...

67% efficienciy at 300° C?? Not in this world! Looks like an error, with the 50% applied in the wrong direction. The diagram is less than ideal for comparison purposes: it doesn't show the electrical output for the steam turbine, only the steam turbine is shown with casing, and the numbers that are...
