You could also setup an Employee Securities Company (ESC) where fusion enthusiasts could be investor/employees, but you would be limited. I noticed that too!

It seems like you'd need (as pictured) several of these at different angles to really understand the plasma distribution instead of just hoping the core size is ~20cm.

I had the same realization about a funding strategy. Social funding is a great alternative to SBIR or DARPA grants. Primarily so because it IS a very risky project, thus, to dilute the risk, increasing the number of financiers seems like the proper road to funding.
