Re: General anti-fusion attitude

Crazy is as Crazy does. It does seem to present as a complex interwoven enemy of my enemy is my friend (for now) construct with a range of relationships from coincidental to fully vested and integrated. Kind of reminds me of the anti-nuclear movement in the 70s to 80s who eventually killed American ...

Re: General anti-fusion attitude

I am not sure I would say that it is mostly friendly. I think there is a high degree of competing going on based on what I've seen/experienced. That said, it is not overtly hostile. I also re-read my post, and want to clarify that personal benefit was meant to be oriented to company benefit, vice in...

Re: MIT claim they will build the SPARC

Now that is interesting.
Lots of thoughts circulating in my mind seeking cohesion, direction, and purpose.
Kind of like an uninsulated coil of wire.

Re: General anti-fusion attitude

Some of the naysaying is highly likely linked to entities seeking to undermine positions of others in order to improve their own. Specifically along the lines of funding access and levels and additionally costing for access to other's work. Given the jump in money made available for fusion efforts t...

Re: MIT claim they will build the SPARC

I gotta say, I too hope they keep the silly populist politics out of the project's reality and just focus on science. You couldn't be more DEI if you did.
In other news, that is a big hole!

Re: General anti-fusion attitude

People with extreme positions tend to be the least informed about the issue they proclaim the extreme position for. Modern populist culture is also deeply rooted in the Information Age. Every clown now has a podium, and to quote a wise song, "We can do "The Innuendo", we can dance and sing, When it'...

Re: EM Drive

Interesting note, the vehicle has gained a little altitude over the last few days, with a slight drop in velocity.
If its dead, I would expect it to start losing speed and altitude as the atmosphere drags it down.
That is of course if the tracking data is good.

Re: EM Drive

Things seem to be dragging out a bit with no news. Generally, no a good sign. Barry-1 has two drives installed, so two chances some data is collected. Also, with both v. one running, it provides a possible confirmation stream that would not exist with just one device. My understanding is one drive i...

Re: ZAP Energy News

True science seeks to uncover what we don't know we don't know.
I applaud all these efforts as each has contributed to the list of things we know we don't know.
Here's to more in 24!

Re: Humble hopes for 2024

I am hoping we make it through another year without getting hit by a pop-up asteroid. The other stuff I can live with.

Re: SpaceX News

I had thought the same. However, after watching the Hot-Stage video several times, the separation seems fast enough that any possible control authority of the grid fins is negligible. Especially given when they are closest to the Starship plume, they are centered and positioned for least drag. It is...

Re: SpaceX News

The altitude of the hot-staging should have greatly reduced any control authority for the grid fins. I saw a CFD effort showing the effect (impact) of the estimated, from flight videos and telemetry feed analysis, which shows significant fuel sloshing in both tanks. My take here is SpaceX is doing s...

Re: SpaceX News

There was an issue with an actuator for one of the grid fins. Where did you see this? I am still seeing a lot of speculation regarding the FTS triggers for both Booster and Starship. We may have to wait until SpaceX releases more information. In any event, the launch through Hot Stage had to be a g...

Re: SpaceX News

And so,...
Launch now moved to Saturday per an Elon Tweet. Looks like they are checking something on the top of the booster, or to do with the Hotstage ring between the booster and second stage (Starship).
Now I have to actually find some work to do at work in the morning.
