And just to stir the pot a bit, I say that alternatives (like algae, cellulosic ethanol, F-T synthesis from coal, ect, and especially this ridiculous corn-ethanol program of Bush's) are going to be too little/too late to make much difference: OneWay is right, and the name of the game will be reduci...

Roger, It has been the way of the oil market for over 100 years. I do not believe this time will be different. The only thing in doubt is when the break will come and how sharp it will be. Simon Just want to respond to this point in detail. Whether this time will be different or not is unimportant ...

Roger, I wish I knew the context. I don't think the shift to winter heating fuels happens until the beginning of September. Typically the rise in prices causes structural changes in the market. These accumulate slowly. At the same time producers find new supplies. The rising prices also increase re...

Why not build a battery that uses both the superior dielectric and the superior charged surface? Because a battery does not use a dielectric. A battery stores energy in ionic bonds. . Slip of the keyboard. I guess that those science fiction stories of 'energy cells' storing enough energy for a Sing...

Physical break down and arcing is the most likely reason. Once you get over 1 MV/m most materials will arc through. Increasing the surface area decreases the thickness for the same volume, so the electric field increases beyond the strength of the dielectric. The ionization potential of a molecule ...

EEStor always claims they'll be in production about a year from whatever date the press release is posted. This game has been going on for a while now. True; I've been watching these guys for years, and am firmly in the I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it camp by now. The big criticism of their patent is...

Science fiction of course, but it may be viable in the next few centuries. IIRC, I recently read that about 50 sq miles of solar panels, at 15% efficiency would power the world. Most panels currently commercially available are in the 15% to 20% range. I think that this is rather optimistic. The sol...

I think that extremely long term, we may see solar as the ultimate source of power. I was reading a Peter Hamilton book where he had an antimatter generation station in very close orbit around a star. At that range, solar cells could produce megawatts per square meter assuming one had cells capable ...

In my opinion www.skywindpower.com has a better idea. Use the turbines themselves to provide lift and one per line. Sounds crazy, but I can't think of any real physical reasons why it wouldn't work per se. Put them well away from populated areas and restrict airspace.
