Slightly off-topic...

Shifting boxes in our loft recently, I came across 'The Jupiter Theft' (Moffit 1977), where-in aliens have mastered meson-powered fusion-- "It's easy when you know how..."

For most of us, the limit is not the power consumption, hence electricity cost, but getting the resultant waste heat out of the core(s)...

Perhaps they don't believe it could work ??

Hmm. I note abstract makes no mention of reaching fusion temperatures and densities, never mind break-even conditions.

I suppose it is a case of 'first catch your rabbit'...

A remarkably modest article...

D'uh, that article was so balanced and cautious, I'm surprised to find it under a 'Popular Mechanics' masthead... I'm impressed by Helion's candour, and their hope that the smart money is in zapping hot waste rather than trying to 'break even' with fusion. FWIW, I'd consider anything but a polywell ...

Rail-gun / Coil-gun erosion...

"We are crazy precise about barrel wear as it affects ballistics quickly." When this issue came up on another forum, it was pointed out that the ranges expected of such a weapon would *demand* terminal guidance. ie you're chucking 'smart rocks' that can steer themselves to a pre-set co-ordinate with...

Over-Unity...

I got as far as the chapter-heading about 'Over-Unity' and read no further. At least he sets his peg in the open !! Uh, however you set your planes and magnets, my now-rudimentary math still shows you can't get 'owt from nowt'... IMHO, this is tangentially related to that proposed 'reaction-less' dr...

Took the secret to his grave ??

This is almost the stuff of Urban Legend (TM): Seems he was so paranoid about being 'ripped off' that he took the secret to his grave... FWIW, I think I remember seeing a live demo of this stuff on UK BBC TV's 'Tomorrow's World' tech-news, years ago. It did like it said on the tin... How it would ha...

D'uh...

http://monotherme.com/translate1_fichiers/translate_p.htm It's a multiple Stirling cycle of some kind, the rest being lost in translation. My guess is the system uses one Stirling module as a 'supercharger' to significantly increase the temperature differential across the other. As a heat-engine's e...

modulation...

I was but two lines into the vixra.org link when I found this... "modulated in opposition to piezo-crystal elasticity" That means it is not a static system. Then it mentions tuning and de-tuning layers. As I understand it, a resonant system contains energy. This means that, to push it in and out of ...

Binding energy...

Uh, harking back to the arguments over binding energy, the paradox is explained by a simple graph. The binding energy per nucleon is at a maximum around iron. Both fusion of lighter nuclei and fission of heavier nuclei may be energetically favourable, depending on process and products... http://hype...

One Term Wonders...

( Watching, bemused, from UK :? ) Used to be, IIRC, that a candidate was selected who stood a fair chance of re-election. Perhaps, given the probability that a POTUS will find *some* way to disappoint a majority, perhaps candidates will be chosen specifically to run for only one term... Cheaper, too...
